Sleep and the impact of stress (Lifestyle therapy)

Susan Leigh is a South Manchester based Counsellor and Hypnotherapist with over 20 years experience. See her new website, www.lifestyletherapy.net.

Stress is becoming an increasing factor of daily life. Worries about job security, finances, crime levels and so on are more and more prevelant.

This stress can filter through and impact into many areas - so that instead of having a 'green for go light' the 'amber light' or even the 'red light' starts to flash and symptoms start to appear that impact on health and well being.

Personal relationships can suffer because of reduced tolerance levels and increased irritibility. There may start to be an increased reliance on alcohol, tobacco, food, drugs, caffeine for comfort, support and help.

Sleeping patterns may be disrupted, so that getting to sleep or fitful sleep becomes more difficult.
Sleep is a very powerful way of allowing the body to heal and the mind to calm and soothe itself.

Often the phrase 'sleep on it' can be used to good effect by allowing the conscious mind to take time out whilst the unconscious mind explores alternative options and perspectives on issues of concern.

This is why it is so important to keep the bedroom as a haven of calm and peace. Keep it free from clutter, with a minimum of electrical gadgets and equipment. Screen off any work areas and ensure that the room smells nice and feels relaxing. Invest in a good quality mattress.

Take time and get advice over the best, most suitable mattress to buy. Maybe take a relaxing bath or shower before bed. Try to avoid eating too late or watching over dramatic films. Think about preparing for bed an hour or so before, so that the latter part of the evening becomes a 'wind down' time. Save that 'deep and meaningful' conversation for a more appropriate time.

And then enjoy just relaxing without putting pressure to sleep. That in itself is a very valuable thing to do.
